It made the oxygen levels zero in parts of the river around Philadelphia and Delaware. The reason? Chemicals and Poop. Back in the ‘fifties, ‘sixties, and seventies, people were just dumping raw sewage right into the river. That can get a lot of people sick. Sewage breeds bacteria in the water, and that bacterium effectively gobbles up all the oxygen, leaving little to none for the fish and other aquatic life in the river.
What did that do to the water? By 1980, about a million pounds of waste was going into the river every day, and more than 60 percent of that was coming from sewage treatment plants, with cities like Wilmington DE contributing the most. But it was not just sewage. There was also blood from slaughterhouses, oil from refineries like Gulf Oil and Sun Oil, and toxic waste from chemical companies like Dupont. Acidic industrial waste lowered the pH of the river several miles above and below the Pa.-Del. state line. Almost none of the waste entering the river was disinfected, so it contained elevated levels of bacteria, eating up all the oxygen.

So, who is correct, the state of Delaware and scientist or an environmental group from DC? How did the river get so bad that we cannot directly answer the outcome? Is it safe or not?
